The Beginner Track at Michigan Classic is a two (2) hour workshop in West Coast Swing taught by Chris and Melissa Moy, who are known for their entertaining style and emotionally captivating musicality. Chris and Melissa Moy are premier West Coast Swing Dance Instructors in the Ann Arbor and Metro Detroit area for over 10 years.

The West Coast Swing Beginner Track is specially designed to guide you through the basics of this smooth and playful style. For experienced West Coast Swing dancers, this is a great opportunity to brush up on your basics, or try the opposite role!

We’ll start with the essential concepts and steps broken down into bite-sized chunks with clear instructions and catchy rhythms. You’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll master the six and eight-count patterns and feel the connection with your partner. This track takes your dancing journey at a comfortable pace, giving you time to absorb each step and build confidence.

West Coast Swing isn’t just about memorizing moves, it’s about connecting with the music and your partner. This track helps you discover the playful spirit of the dance, encouraging you to express yourself and have a blast along the way.

West Coast Swing is a versatile and evolving partner dance that originated from Lindy Hop in the mid-20th century. Known for its adaptability to various styles of music, West Coast Swing is characterized by its smooth, elastic connection between partners and a unique emphasis on improvisation and musical interpretation.

• $20 for first time dancers
• Preparatory exercises focused on Rhythm and Connection
• Builds to following sequence: Left Side, Right Side (Under Arm Turn), Push Break, Whip
• One (1) hour of social dancing will follow the lesson
• At 9:00 PM, we will head to the Main Ballroom to watch some of the top dancers in West Coast Swing compete in our Champions Jack & Jill, followed by late-night social dancing
